The Institute of Mathematics at the University of Granada will host the "Minimal Surfaces in Symmetric Spaces" workshop at the University of Granada (IMAG) in Spain from May 21 - 26, 2023.

Soap films and bubbles have fascinated children and scientists for centuries. Mathematically, minimal surface theory -- with roots reaching back to Euler -- has been fundamental in the development of geometric analytic techniques and is presently experiencing extraordinary progress. It stands at the crossroads of several scientific disciplines, including geometric analysis, algebraic geometry, dynamical systems, and mathematical physics (string theory, quantum field theories). The workshop will facilitate interactions and foster long-term collaborations between researchers in these areas who are – often unbeknownst – studying similar phenomena from different perspectives while using different techniques.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. BIRS is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
