Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Quasi-isometric rigidity in low dimensional topology" workshop from March 7th to March 12th, 2010.

Quasi-isometry refers to the study of mathematical objects up to bounded deformation. Among other things, it allows the geometric study of algebraic objects. In this workshop we will focus on studying applications to algebraic objects associated with objects of low dimensional topology, including dynamical systems on surfaces, potential shapes for the universe, and many others, One of the attractions of the area is that it involves many other diverse areas. Despite the flurry of activity which has occurred in recent years, open problems abound, and the workshop brings together a wide range of experts to discuss these.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the US National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
