Description

The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) will host the "Leveraging Mathematical Modeling for Action and Education Toward Social Justice" workshop in Oaxaca, from May 11 to May 16, 2025.

In response to the evolving landscape of mathematics education to incorporate social justice principles, The workshop, titled "Leveraging mathematical modeling for action and education toward social justice," is set to ignite multidisciplinary conversations among experts from diverse fields. The workshop will examine key topics such as ethno-modeling, environmental justice, the identity of women and girls in STEM disciplines, and AI and social justice. This workshop will nurture interdisciplinary collaboration between mathematicians, industry experts, community members, and mathematics educators to tackle mathematical modeling and social justice themes at all educational levels. Further collaboration among educators and teachers from Mexico, Canada, the USA, and Latin America is expected due to this workshop.

The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) in Mexico, and the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) in Banff, are collaborative Canada-US-Mexico ventures that provide an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station in Banff is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology.
