Description

The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) will host the "Mixtures of Probability and Geometry" workshop in Oaxaca, from May 25 to May 30, 2025.

Geometry is the study of shapes, volumes and lengths, as well as the relations between them. The study of many aspects of the natural and social sciences very often leads to simplified discrete approximations of geometric objects. For example, a map of a subway network or a map of major streets and avenues models the general disposition of a city. This maps assigns dots to stations or important city landmarks, and lines correspond to either adjacent subway stations or city landmarks connected by streets.

Probability is the mathematical study of chances and odds, and it is extensively used in mathematical modelling of systems. Withing the example of a map, the traffic on a street or a subway network can be modeled by an stochastic process.

In recent times, interactions of higher-dimensional character, more complex than the ones depicted by dots and lines, have been studied. The workshop aims to develop probabilistic tools for phenomena occurring in these geometric objects.

The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) in Mexico, and the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) in Banff, are collaborative Canada-US-Mexico ventures that provide an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station in Banff is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology.
