Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Derived Categories, Arithmetic, and Reconstruction in Algebraic Geometry" workshop in Banff from July 3 - 8, 2022.

Mathematicians working in algebraic geometry study geometric shapes which can be defined using polynomial equations.

Over the years, several technical tools have been developed to help in this task. One such tool, which has played an increasingly significant role in the subject since the 1960s, is the so-called derived category. Amazingly, recent results around this area show that derived categories (and other related structures), actually encode significant information about algebraic varieties from both arithmetic and geometric points of view. This workshop brings together mathematicians at various career stages whose interests revolve around these recent results. The organizers hope that a week of focused interactions around these new developments could lead to significant new developments in the field.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
