New Challenges in Energy Markets - Data Analytics, Modelling and Numerics (19w5229)

The Banff International Research Station will host the "New Challenges in Energy Markets - Data Analytics, Modelling and Numerics" workshop in Banff from September 22 to September 27, 2019.

This workshop will bring together academics and industry practitioners from around the world working in related areas to focus on the new challenges that are arising from the rapid changes taking place in energy commodity and related environmental markets, including the explosive growth in the amount and variety of data that is becoming available. They will discuss new ideas in data analytics, modelling and numerics that are being developed to meet these challenges. Energy markets have in recent years become fertile ground for the application of new mathematical techniques, but much work is still needed. As markets become more integrated, renewables grow, regulations change and new products appear, old modelling approaches must be adapted or dropped in favour of new, flexible, computationally-efficient and well-calibrated models to better understand unusual and complex risks, price dynamics and participant behaviour.

Therefore, a primary aim of the workshop is to seek to identify opportunities for cross fertilization of innovative and complementary ideas, stimulating interdisciplinary collaboration across academia and also with industry. On the one hand, we aim to strengthen academic research agendas by targeting the most important problems currently faced by the energy sector. Simultaneously, we hope to help better equip practitioners with the latest mathematical techniques and academic knowledge tailored to energy applications. Moreover, by including both young PhD students or postdocs and senior researchers from across disciplines and locations, we envisage the creation of many exciting new research partnerships. The workshop’s mix of traditional research talks, lively discussion sessions, industry panels and smaller working groups should ensure a rewarding experience for all, paving the way for much promising future research in the area.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
