Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Women in Commutative Algebra (WICA)" workshop in Banff from October 20, 2019 to October 25, 2019.

Women in Commutative Algebra (WICA) is a five-day workshop focused on research collaboration in small groups. The women algebraists, ranging from early-career mathematicians to leaders in the field, will conduct research on cutting edge topics in commutative algebra. The major goals of WICA are the following:

  • Make advances in commutative algebra through state-of-the-art research.
  • Promote the research of women in commutative algebra.
  • Facilitate collaborative interaction between junior and senior mathematicians, which includes

    • Bolstering leadership among women researchers, and
    • Providing mentoring for early career mathematicians.

  • Develop a research network among women commutative algebraists.
  • Advance the academic careers of women algebraists through research publications and professional connections, including those

    • from historically underrepresented groups,
    • from universities with a teaching focus and small colleges, and those
    • isolated geographically from potential collaborators.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
