Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Analysis and Computation of Vector Functionalized Cahn Hilliard Equations and Application to Amphiphilic Materials" workshop in Banff from July 12 to July 19, 2015.


The international academic team of Arjen Doelman (Netherlands), Keith Promislow (USA), and Brian Wetton (Canada) will explore mathematical models of complex activated polymer materials using mathematical analysis and novel computer simulation tools. The models give insight into materials with molecular scale morphology that allow for selective ion transport that have applications in fuel cells, solar cells and batteries. These promising technologies will form the underpinning of the emerging Energy Economy but are currently limited by the development of materials that allow greater efficiency, performance, and durability of these devices. This project focuses on a continuum description of the materials that can incorporate parameters from molecular dynamics simulations, illuminate issues from manufacturing and processing, and predict the macroscopic properties of new materials.


The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
