The Banff International Research Station will host the "Vojta's Conjectures" workshop from September 28th to October 3rd, 2014.

Number theory is one of the oldest and most elegant branches of mathematics, with connections to virtually every other branch of mathematics. In the 1980s, Paul Vojta formulated some powerful and sweeping conjectures in number theory, conjectures that have guided number theorists ever since. Professor Vojta's inspiration for his conjectures was his uncovering of a deep connection to a branch of geometry known as Nevanlinna Theory, named for the celebrated Finnish mathematician Rolf Nevanlinna.

In the last few years, interest in Vojta's conjectures has exploded, with exciting new developments arriving every year. This first ever workshop dedicated to the exploration of Vojta's conjectures and their consequences will bring together experts in wide-ranging areas of number theory and Nevanlinna theory to concentrate on this fast-moving area of mathematics.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
