Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Toric Boij-Söderberg theory" workshop from May 20th to May 27th, 2012.

Dating back to Hilbert's work in the 19th century, free resolutions
provide a powerful technique for studying systems of polynomial
equations. A free resolution can be presented as a family of matrices
with polynomial entries. This object has developed into an essential
tool within commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. The emerging
"Boij-Söderberg theory" is revolutionizing our understanding of free
resolutions. This Research Team seeks to extend these insights to
many new classes of resolutions, including the important class of
multigraded free resolutions.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
