Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Models for minimal Cantor $Z^2$ systems" workshop from August 5th to August 12th, 2012.

Dynamical systems is first and foremost the study of the evolution of physical systems in time. However, by replacing time by a discrete component, it has also had important applications in information theory and coding. As well, replacing time by a spatial component which is multidimensional, it has also proved an important tool in the understanding of physical materials called quasi-crystals, whose atomic arrangement displays a high degree of regularity without complete predictability.

The goal of the workshop is to find a general simple combinatorial construction of two-dimensional dynamics, which clarify and make explicit the role of existing invariants.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
