The Banff International Research Station will host the "Emerging issues in the analysis of longitudinal data" workshop next week, August 16 - August 21, 2009.

Studies in medicine, social sciences and other fields commonly follow subjects over time and monitor them for changes. Such changes may relate to the frequency of occurrence of some important events, such as recurrences for some disease, hospital re-admissions, etc. In certain cases, the major focus of the study is a comparison across individuals of such changes, perhaps across individuals in undergoing different treatments for the disease.

There are many challenges in the analysis of such complex data. A major challenge is missing data, especially for lengthy studies. In addition, there may be errors in measurement, or different kinds of responses of interest all of which impact the overall understanding of the nature of the responses over time.

This workshop will bring together international experts in this important field of research to advance our understanding of the methods and tools which can be effectively brought to bear in the analysis of such complex data.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the US National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologí­a (CONACYT).
