Digital computers and their efficiency on processing data is one of the main driving forces behind much of our modern technology. Not surprisingly, this places an ever increasing demand on providing accurate conversion between the real-world signals, such as audio, images, and video, and the digital world. This workshop (Coarsely Quantized Redundant Representations of Signals, March 11-16, 2006) at the Banff International Research Station brings together expert mathematicians and engineers to discuss some of the latest advancements in the theory and practice of analog-to-digital conversion with special emphasis on applications in high-precision audio and image encoding. Among the participants are Prof. Ingrid Daubechies of Princeton University (member of the American National Academy of Sciences) and Prof. Jan Allebach of Purdue University who are world renowned experts in their respective fields in mathematics and engineering. Progress in the areas covered in this workshop could have far reaching consequences in digital audio applications as well as the technology behind digital cameras and printers.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is administered by the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences, which itself is a collaborative venture between the major universities in Alberta, BC and Washington State.
