Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "The Use of Linear Algebraic Groups in Geometry and Number Theory" workshop from September 13th to September 18th, 2015.


The theory of linear algebraic groups was developed by Chevalley, Borel, Serre, and Tits as an algebraic analogue of the highly successful and widely applied theory of Lie groups, and it now serves to provide deep connections between algebra, number theory, and geometry.


The purpose of workshop is to exploit new emerging applications of algebraic groups, to bring together specialists and young researchers in these areas, and to establish new links and projects.





The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
