Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Statistics and Nonlinear Dynamics in Biology and Medicine" workshop from July 27th to August 1st, 2014.

The past decade has seen a massive increase in data recorded from environmental and public health monitoring, medical equipment and scientific experiments. These data allow scientists, doctors and public health professionals to examine in detail the way systems change over time in response to their own state and the environment around them. While there are many mathematical models that purport to describe the systems that are now being monitored, attempts to reconcile these models with data have only recently been undertaken in earnest. This workshop will bring together statisticians, mathematicians, ecologists and biologists to develop new methods to understand how this new wealth of data can inform and improve mathematical models in these fields and how these models, in turn, can affect how the data is collected and measured.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
